Getting comfortable with KakaoTalk in Korea.
Useful words and everyday context for your first conversations.
A little introduction
You may be asked to connect on KakaoTalk by people you meet in Korea. Start with the basics, confirm who you are adding, and share only the information you intend to share.
Choose the correct country code
During phone verification, use the country or region option that matches your own mobile number and follow the instructions shown. Availability and verification requirements are determined by Kakao.
- Check the number before requesting verification.
- Keep access to your own phone during setup.
- For an unsupported number or restriction, use Kakao's official help.
Decide how you want to connect
Ask the other person which available add-friend method they use. A KakaoTalk ID or QR code may be useful when you do not want to share your phone number.
- Confirm the profile belongs to the person you expect.
- Review friend-discovery and privacy settings.
- Treat unexpected messages from unfamiliar accounts with care.
Recognise a few useful words
These words may help when your phone or app shows Korean. Their exact placement can vary.
- 검색 — Search · 설치 — Install · 받기 — Get
- 열기 — Open · 다음 — Next · 확인 — Confirm
- 친구 — Friends · 채팅 — Chats · 설정 — Settings
- 인증번호 — Verification code · 허용 — Allow
Messaging and other services are different
Services you encounter inside or alongside KakaoTalk can have separate eligibility, identity-verification, or payment requirements. A messaging account does not mean every additional service is ready to use.
- Read the requirements of the specific service you choose.
- Review any request for personal information before continuing.
- For desktop use, follow Kakao's official instructions and check chat-backup guidance before moving devices.
Questions, answered.
Can I change the app's language?
Check the language options available in your version of KakaoTalk or your phone's app-language settings. Changing menu language does not automatically translate messages written by other people.
Someone added me to a group. What should I check?
Look at the group name and participants, and confirm its purpose with the person who invited you. You can review the chat's notification and privacy options before taking part.
Do I have to share my phone number with everyone?
No. Choose an available connection method you are comfortable with, such as an ID or QR code, and review the relevant discovery settings. Share personal details only with the people you intend to contact.
